How often should we go to couples counseling?

It’s a common question … “How often should we come to couples counseling?”.  And, as is the case with most things, it depends.

It depends upon the urgency of the issues being addressed. It depends upon the specific needs and dynamics of the relationship. And it depends upon the availability and budget of both partners.

Weekly counseling sessions are a popular option, although it is not always necessary or feasible.

Ideally, the decision regarding the frequency of couples counseling sessions should be made in collaboration with the therapist. A qualified therapist will assess the situation – including the needs of the couple - and make recommendations based on expertise and experience.

Do keep in mind that the starting frequency doesn’t mean that you’re locked into an approach for the longer term. Weekly sessions may be recommended initially to address urgent issues or to establish a consistent routine, changing to bi-weekly or monthly once progress is seen and the relationship stabilizes.

The severity of the issues at hand obviously plays a significant role in determining the ideal frequency of the sessions. Couples dealing with complex or deeply rooted issues may benefit from more frequent sessions. This better allows for a chance to create and maintain momentum, addressing pressing challenges more effectively. The opposite also holds true. Couples facing less severe issues may find that bi-weekly or monthly sessions are sufficient.

The availability of both partners certainly comes into play and is an essential factor in determining the frequency. Busy work schedules, childcare responsibilities, or other commitments affect one’s ability to add another time commitment. Finding a balance between addressing the needs of the relationship and accommodating individual schedules is crucial.

The financial aspect should never be overlooked. Weekly sessions can add up quickly, especially if insurance coverage is limited or unavailable.

An experienced therapist will help you figure it all out. They’ll help you weigh the relationship dynamics, the urgency of the issues at play, the logistics and the costs in order to put a plan in place that meets your unique needs.
